Durgapur - where dreams are made of steel

In 1950s, Bengal saw a dream to change its eco-socio-political structure together with the visionary Chief Minister, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. He aimed to urbanize the state through Tier II industrial cities, a thought with which Durgapur Steel City was first conceived.

168 kilometres north of Kolkata, the Durgapur Municipal Corporation Area was principally urban in character mainly due to the presence of large industrial establishments and their townships. Easier Government norms, good climate, roads and comfortable living conditions made this city a preferred town for the rising middle class, the double income group and nuclear families.
